About this site

GolfCourseGeek is a small independent site run from Montana. It exists because the question “what is this course actually like?” is usually answered with a photo of the signature hole and a star rating, when the shape of the whole course has been sitting in OpenStreetMap for years. So this site draws it: every mapped fairway, green and bunker on aerial imagery and terrain, with the numbers that geometry gives.

Where the data comes from

Course geometry is from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL), extract of October 15, 2026: 13,416 US courses, 7,938 of them drawn hole by hole, 135,727 holes in all. Aerial imagery is the USGS National Map and USDA NAIP, which are public domain. Elevation is USGS 3DEP via AWS Terrain Tiles. The base map is OpenFreeMap. Towns and counties come from the US Census Bureau's TIGER boundaries. Each figure's formula is on the measurement page.

What it does not do

  • No staff, no test lab, no site visits. Everything is computed from the sources above; nothing is an opinion of the site.
  • No rankings, no ratings, no paid placement. Courses appear in alphabetical or distance order.
  • No green fees, course ratings or slope, because no open source publishes them.
  • No affiliate or booking links. The only outbound link on a course page is the course's own website as recorded on the map.

Fixing things

A missing course, a hole drawn wrong, a name out of date: edit it on OpenStreetMap and it will flow through at the next refresh. A number that disagrees with the map it came from is a bug here; report it.
